civil ceremony

Italian civil weddings take place in your local commune, and are conducted by the deputy mayor of the town. A civil wedding commune usually needs to be booked approximately 6 months in advance. For example, the more popular communes such as Florence, Siena, San Gimignano and Certaldo book up 6 months in advance and are closed on weekends. While EU citizens are not required to be in the country before the wedding date, we recommend you are in the country at least 2 days prior to the wedding day for you civil declaration (witnesses do not need to be present for this declaration). For US Citizens you must be in the country 4 days prior to the wedding day as your declaration must take place on a Tuesday or Thursday (subject to change).
